Class B Sectionals
BINGHAMTON – Norwich seniors Bryn Loomis and Sophie Stewart won two matches on the first day of the Section IV Class B Tennis Tournament Monday at Recreation Park in Binghamton to stay on course for a third straight sectional title.
Loomis and Stewart won both of their matches in straight sets, the latter a dominant 6-0, 6-2 quarterfinals win over Lexi Lamb and Megan Santacrose of Chenango Valley.
“They played as well as they needed to in the first round, but they got much sharper in the second round,” said Norwich coach John Stewart of his top doubles team.
Norwich sophomores Jenny Borfitz and Breanna Cashman won their first-round matches before losing to Susquehanna Valley’s Alexa Cohn and Alli Stark in the second round. The win for the Tornado sophomores, though, puts Norwich in position to place second in team scoring. “I told (Jenny and Breanna) that I’ve had girls come to sectionals two or three years, and never win a match,” Stewart said, “and they won their first time here.”
The semifinal match for Loomis and Stewart begins today at 2:30 p.m. when they face Emily Denny and Marcy Whitney of Susquehanna Valley.
