Sherburne-Earlville 55, Camden 47
SHERBURNE – Cazenovia started the fourth quarter on an 8-0 run to extend its third-quarter lead to 51-41, and the Storm were unable to recover in the finals of the Sherburne-Earlville Tournament Saturday afternoon.
Kevin Hopsicker, the tournament’s most valuable player, came to life on the offensive end in the last eight minutes scoring 11 of his 15 points. “Throughout the game, we kept battling back,” said UV coach Matt Osborne. “We didn’t shoot as well as Friday, but we kept doing what we needed to do to stay in the game.”
Justin Hofer brought UV back from a 29-18 halftime shortfall scoring 14 of his 18 points leaving the Storm within 43-41 with eight minutes to play. Brett Smith added 11 points for UV, and Hofer contributed 10 rebounds and seven blocked shots.
In the consolation game, the host Marauders earned a third-place showing beating Camden by eight points. Sam Caton had 13 points and eight rebounds, most of those points and rebounds coming in the first three quarters as S-E created a 43-25 bulge. “We played excellent defense for three quarters, and really shut them down with our man-to-man defense,” said S-E coach Kevin Vibbard. “We had seven guys with at least six points. It works out well when you have that type of balanced scoring, and the other team can’t focus its defense on one guy.”
