Greg Bingham Invitational
SLATE HILL – Oxford sophomore Joe Nelson padded his resume this season with yet another tournament title. A winner at Oxford’s Clyde Cole Tournament and at Walton’s Cuneen-Doane tourney, Nelson captured the Greg Bingham Invitational Sunday evening at Minisink Valley High School.
Nelson defeated well regarded Section IX wrestler Gerard Daly, 9-1, in the 99-pound championship finals. Nelson was subsequently named the tournament’s most outstanding wrestler. “There was a lot of anticipation heading into that match because Joe hasn’t had a lot of tough competition in Section IV this year,” said Oxford volunteer assistant coach, Andy Hadlock of the finals. “This was a good indicator for states.”
Nelson took Daly down and executed his patented bar tilt for back points. He nearly pinned Daly at the end of the second period in a dominant performance.
To reach the finals, Nelson earned a pair of pinfall victories.
Joe Jackson (170) also placed for the Blackhawks finishing third. Jackson won three out of four matches finishing with a 11-2 major decision over Minisink Valley’s Frank Mayo. “This was a real good accomplishment for Joe,” Hadlock said. “He’s starting to prove himself and is turning it on toward the end of the year.”
Oxford hosts Ithaca tonight in a non-league dual meet.
