NORWICH – Norwich High School senior Dillan Smith’s self-described “spur of the moment” decision to audition for the Endicott Performing Arts Center’s EPAC Idol competition seems to have paid off. On Friday, the talented local performer will compete for a share of more than $11,000 in prizes, including a chance to create a professional CD of his own to be broadcast over the airwaves during a live radio interview.
With Smith, however, this kind of recognition isn’t all that unusual.
“It was obvious to me when he first came to the district as a sophomore that he was a very talented musician and he has taken advantage of every opportunity here,” said NHS Choir and Madrigal Singers Director Mary Mayo of the young vocalist. “He’s an excellent leader ... he’s excellent with his peers.”
Smith is one of 20 semi-finalists who will perform for a spot in the top five at 6:30 p.m. Friday at the Endicott Performing Arts Center, and is one of 110 vocalists who originally auditioned for the competition. On Saturday, the finalists will be announced and will have one last chance to wow the audience, which will cast the deciding vote.
