NORWICH – A special meeting of the Norwich City School District Board of Education held Wednesday morning addressed uncollected taxes within the district and found board members voting unanimously in approval of a resolution certifying those taxes be turned over to the City of Norwich and Chenango County.

The district collected approximately $11,100,000 through its tax levy, an estimated $1,970,000 of which was received through the state’s School Tax Relief Program, according to NCSD Deputy Superintendent Robert Wightman, for a base value of approximately $8,260,000, an estimated $872,500 of which went uncollected. The district collected more than 90 percent of the levy this year, up from 88.94 percent in 2010-2011 and 82.21 percent in 2009-2010.

The resolution comes approximately five weeks before voters will weigh-in on the 2012-2013 budget.

On April 2, the board voted unanimously in its approval of next year’s budget, which would see a budget-to-budget increase of 1.86 percent compared to last year’s and a tax levy increase of 1.79 percent if approved by voters. A budget hearing will be held at 6 p.m. on May 7 in the high school auditorium and voting will be held from noon to 9 p.m. on May 15. A total of three available board member seats – each carrying a three-year term – are also up for grabs.
