NORWICH – The demand for public safety services in Chenango County continues to increase, according to a 2011 annual report Sheriff Ernest Cutting delivered to county lawmakers earlier this year. Here are some of the statistics from the report:

In 2011, the Sheriff’s Communications Division took in 113,924 total emergency and non-emergency calls for service in Chenango County, an increase of 10 percent over the previous year. Of those, 33,708 resulted in a law enforcement event and 10,053 were fire and Emergency Management Services calls.

The Dispatch Center is staffed by 11 full-time and six part-time public safety dispatchers. It is also primary dispatch for the New York State Police in Norwich and takes after hours calls for the Norwich Police Department and the Chenango County department of highway, public health, social services and medical examiner.

The Chenango County Law Enforcement Division, consisting of 23 full-time deputies, handled 17,137 complaints and calls for police service, the New York State Police, 9,717; the Greene Police Department,1,700; Norwich City Police, 1,651; the New Berlin Police Department,1,267; the Oxford Police Department, 925; Sherburne Police Department, 655; Afton Police Department, 442; and Bainbridge Police Department, 125.

Law Enforcement Division detectives made 1,131 criminal arrests last year, including 360 felony arrests last year, up by 80 over 2010. There were 533 misdemeanor arrests; 238 violations and miscellaneous arrests and 43 DWIs.
