Greene Tournament
GREENE - Greene dealt Whitney Point its first loss of the season on Friday night, 7-1, and erupted for 20 runs on Saturday in the championship game walloping Oxford, 20-4, in the fourth annual Greene Tournament.
The Blackhawks hung tight early on as Jacquelyn Heggie’s two-out three-run homer in the third moved her club within one, 4-3. Greene answered back with three of its own in the bottom half of the frame, and continued to score in every at-bat.
“I think our confidence went way up after beating (Oxford) on Thursday,” said Greene coach Rick Smith. “We were aggressive on the base paths, and we executed really well.”
Taylor Ellis was a perfect 4-for-4 with four runs scored. Morgan Ellis and Natalie Greene added three hits apiece.
In the consolation game, Norwich won for the sixth time this season – its most wins in at least 18 seasons – toppling Whitney Point, 8-1.
Katie Callahan had a two-run single in Norwich’s three-run fourth, and finished with three RBI. Logan Thompson drove in three runs as well, while Shannon Moore and Morgan Loucks contributed 2-for-4 days at the plate.
“Whitney Point was a good win for us,” said Norwich coach Scott Moore. “Everybody got some hits for us this weekend, and we were able to get the small ball going.”
