COPES CORNERS – Bang, bang, and G-MU’s seventh-inning rally and 2012 season were over.

Raiders lefty Jenny Mason hit a hard line drive up the middle that Schenevus pitcher Taylor Spranger snagged below her knees. With all of G-MU’s runners moving on the hit, Spranger had her choice of bases for the double play, and calmly threw back to first base for the final out.

“That’s what softball is all about. You make good plays and you make bad plays,” said G-MU coach Tina Cole. “If the game is going to end, I want it to end on something where the other team makes a great play like that rather than an error or a blooper.”

Schenevus stretched its lead to 8-2 in the top of the fifth with four runs, and needed all of those runs. After the first two runners in the inning reached by a hit by pitch and a walk, Maura Harrington hit an RBI single to left. An error on the play allowed another run to score, and Harrington came home on a single. An RBI single from Megan Tefft contributed to the damage.

G-MU battled back with four runs of its own in the bottom half of the inning. Logan Eltz, who finished with three hits and two RBI, had an RBI single, and Mariah Bliss added a two-run single to right, part of her three RBI day.
