NORWICH – Cody Barnes threw 5 1/3 innings of no-hit relief for Oxford-Norwich’s American Legion team in an 8-3 victory over visiting Whitney Point Sunday afternoon.
Barnes spelled starter Colby Griffin, who was relieved after recording two outs in the second inning. Barnes struck out 12 of the 16 batters he faced, and the Oxford-Norwich hurlers combined on a no-hitter.
Brendan McInerney, Griffin, Justin Lindenthaler, John Yacano, Ryan Moore, and Josh Haines all drove in runs for Oxford-Norwich, who had 12 different players record the team’s 12 hits.
Friday at Cooperstown, Oxford-Norwich played to a 2-2 tie with Cooperstown over eight innings with the game called due to the field’s night curfew.
Griffin hit a two-out single in the seventh to score McInerney with the tying run. Griffin and McInerney also led with two hits apiece.
Ben Barnes logged seven innings striking out 11, walking two, and giving up two earned runs on five hits. Lindenthaler pitched a scoreless eighth inning.
