NORWICH – From the sanctuary to the stage, the sacred steel stylings of The Campbell Brothers are coming to town as the Chenango Blues Association presents the third installment of its popular Summer Concert Series at 7 p.m. Thursday in East Park.
Sacred steel – an African-American spiritual tradition for more than 60 years – is a unique blend of gospel, blues and soul; a genre that’s swept the nation over the past decade thanks to acts such as Robert Randolph and the Family Band and The Campbell Brothers. It’s a compelling mixture of music and spirituality, according to brothers Chuck and Darick Campbell, an “integral part of worship and a vital, if little known, American tradition.”
Said Chenango Blues Association President Eric Larsen, who’s experienced the inspirational act firsthand, “It’s very unique ... they have a fantastic sacred steel tradition and they put on a great show.”
Featuring Chuck and Darick Campbell on lap and pedal steel respectively, brother Phil Campbell on electric and bass guitar, Carlton Campbell on drums and Katie Jackson on vocals, The Campbell Brothers band is considered by many one of the foremost sacred steel ensembles in the nation. It’s Jackson’s classic, soulful vocals – paired with the singing tone of the steel guitar – that make the band so versatile and expressive, said Larsen.
