SKANEATELES – The quickest path from point A to point B is by air, and Skaneateles proved that Friday night against the ground-oriented Marauders.
Ranked among the top teams in state, the Lakers threw for 368 yards and six TD passes in rolling past the Marauders in the first round of the Section III Class C playoffs.
Conor Herr tossed five TD passes on 24 of 33 attempts finishing with 298 yards. Later in the game, backup signal-caller Tyler Parr completed a 70-yard TD pass, that one coming after the S-E defensive back fell down in deep coverage. “Their quarterback reads plays well and he doesn’t make mistakes,” said S-E fourth-year coach Mike Jasper. “If it’s not there, he runs it or gets the ball out of there.”
S-E (4-3) was not without its moments running for 344 yards. Still, early opportunities to score slipped away, and the host Lakers cashed in on just about every scoring chance. “We didn’t close the deal,” Jasper said. “You can’t leave points out there, especially with their offense. They lit it up throwing the ball for sure.”
Herr threw TD passes to Max Dwyer, Max Weiss, and Steven Bright in the first half, and Weiss added a TD run for the 28-0 halftime lead. The margin swelled to 42-0 in the third after Herr connected with all-state receiver Jake Cooney on a pair of scoring tosses.
