SHERBURNE – Everyone is invited to join in a free Thanksgiving Dinner, fueled by generous community spirit, Thursday from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., at the United Methodist Church on Chapel Street in Sherburne. The Sherburne Lion’s Club began its traditional Thanksgiving dinner in 1985 on the whim of one of its members. Now every Thanksgiving, the club feeds over 100 people, with some coming in to sit down and eat while others who can’t get out that day receive delivered meals.
“I’ve gone on delivery runs a few of the times and everyone is so appreciative,” said Lion’s Club member Ken Van Wagner. “Sometimes they try to pay us and put money in my hand, but that’s not what we are here for.” Van Wagner said he believes the gratitude and positive feedback the club sees every year is one of the reasons the event has developed into a time-honored tradition with almost three decades under its belt.
