SHERBURNE – Sherburne-Earlville pulled away from Unadilla Valley in the last three minutes to repeat as S-E Tip-off Tournament champions Saturday night.
Jordan Van Althuis hit two free throws to raise S-E’s lead to five points, and freshman Savannah Irwin made it a seven-point advantage with a steal and layup at the two-minute mark. Van Althuis had 18 points and six rebounds, Irwin scored 13, and fellow S-E freshman Lily Berg added 11 points.
UV seniors Jordan Anderson and Amanda Off scored 19 points apiece, and the duo accounted for 20 of their team’s 23 points in the second half. The Storm were without key contributor Taylor Davis throughout the second half. Davis was injured in the second quarter and didn’t return.
“I thought we played really well against an experienced team,” said S-E coach Karen Mulligan. “We’ve played each other a lot of times, so we knew what to expect.”
Mikayla Solloway added eight points, seven rebounds, and six assists to the victory, and was also named to the all-tournament team.
In the consolation game, Hamilton held B-G to just four points over the final 11:37 outscoring the Bobcats 18-4 during that stretch to rally for the victory. “We absolutely couldn’t score in the final quarter, and everything else was going in the wrong direction,” said B-G coach Bob Conway.
