NORWICH – Norwich junior Breanna Cashman made two defensive gems in the final 13 seconds to snuff out CV’s attempts at tying the game and preserve the Purple Tornado’s first win of the season Tuesday.
With CV down three and in possession of the ball, Cashman stole Maddie Staiger’s pass on the right wing with 13 seconds remaining. After NHS missed a pair of free throws, Cashman secured the win with a steal of Dani Forbidussi. Cashman cashed in on a single free throw with 1.5 seconds left to put the game out of reach.
CV did not take its first lead until two minutes were expired in the third quarter. Staiger hit a three ball to make it 33-31. The Warriors’ Maggie Gross drove for a three-point play, and baseline jumper from Forbidussi created a 41-38 lead entering the fourth.
Norwich combined its youth and veteran leadership to surge in the final period. Third-year varsity palyer Jenni Borfitz immediately tied the game 13 seconds into the fourth burying a three ball after an assist from senior fourth-year player Cassie Sutton. Sutton also had a three that raised the advantage to 52-46 with just over three minutes to play.
