Dear Editor,
The Norwich High School Athletic Council would like to take this opportunity to thank the numerous
people who helped make the first ever Sports Fair such a successful event during the weekend of April
19-20. The fun began Friday night with a highly entertaining basketball game featuring the Harlem
Superstars and the Norwich Dream Team.
We would like to thank the Harlem Superstars and their manager, General Mitchell - they were a pleasure
to work with. The players were kind enough to make visits to both Perry Browne and Stanford Gibson
schools to encourage the children to not only become involved in sports but also to strive to achieve
your dreams because anything is possible.
The Norwich Dream Team - Pat Newell, Josh Bennett, Kurt Edwards, Kisten Giglio, Mike Genute, Rich
Turnbull, Grant Brightman, Kyle Edwards and Danny Carson - our thanks to all of these players; they
made the game enjoyable and provided a lot of laughs for all in attendance. Speaking of being good
natured and providing entertainment, thank you to Phil Curley for being our referee and getting picked
on by the Superstars. Tim Foote was kind enough to lend his coaching talents to the Dream Team as well
as running a Hot Shot tournament. We also had numerous ball boys that assisted during the game -
thanks out go out to them as well.
While it is easy to notice all the people on the court, it is without doubt that an event such as this Sports
Fair could not take place without the people behind the scenes. Mrs. Mennis, Dolly Marvin, Scottie
Decker, Marie DeSarro, along with the school maintenance crew, worked long hours to make this
successful; we greatly appreciate your dedication.
Within every organization there is always a key person, the individual who is always called upon and
never turns down any request. Our Student Athletic Council advisor, Mrs. Shelly Alger, is that person - she
worked countless hours to insure that everything ran smoothly and we cannot thank her enough.
Our events continued on Saturday with multiple games and booths throughout the middle and high
schools with multiple prizes awarded. Thanks to all groups and students who helped run the games
throughout the day. Concluding the festivities Saturday night was an adult versus student volleyball
game - a hard fought battle was put up by Rich Turnbull, Coach Kline, Mr. Komenderak, Kisten Giglio,
Josh Bennett, Ann Callahan, Phil Curley and Eric Portelli.
Lastly, we would like to thank the Norwich community for coming out and supporting our efforts.
Creating an atmosphere of excitement around sports and becoming active was our goal - we hope that
everyone had a great time. Thanks to everyone that came out, worked at any of the events or helped in
any way- we truly appreciate your support.
Sincerely,
Norwich High School Student Athletic Council
