AFTON – Despite dropping 10 shots from his opening-round score, Brandon O’Brien had enough game left in a three-hole playoff to defeat Josh Hitchcock for the men’s scratch championship at Afton Golf Club Sunday.
O’Brien was red-hot in his opening round Saturday shooting an 8-under-par 64 to create a four-shot lead over Tom McCarthy, who placed third overall one shot back. O’Brien had seven birdies, and added eagles on the par-five seventh and ninth holes to create the early lead.
Hitchcock made up a six-shot deficit with the low round Sunday notching a 4-under-par 68.
Lori Shelley ran away with the women’s scratch title shooting a two-round total of 8-over-par to beat runner-up Donna Palmatier by 21 strokes. Roger Barr was a winner in the super seniors division beating second-place Phil Livingston by two shots. Eric Juliussen captured the men’s handicap title by just one shot topping Jason Panek.
