CHENANGO COUNTY – Less than a week after severe flooding devastated the northern region of the county, area residents are facing more of the same today after heavy rains moved in again overnight and even more rain is forecast over the next couple of days.

Flash flooding conditions in the Village of Sherburne are worse than what emergency crews saw last Friday, when more than five inches of rain was dumped on the area, washing out rural roads and bridges. The Chenango River, bordering the village, crested at 11.14 feet early Tuesday morning, compared to its crest at 10.14 feet last Friday. It is the fourth highest river crest in that area in recorded history, behind the flooding in 2011, 2006 and 1914.

“Again, there has been significant flooding, mostly in the northern part of the county,” said Chenango County Chief Dispatcher A. Jones. “South Otselic was hit pretty hard and it moved into Sherburne and Plymouth overnight.”

Waters reached the front doors of homes and several businesses in the Village of Sherburne, including the Dollar General and the D&D Diner. A voluntary evacuation was issued for village residents; and at Handsome Brook Estates just north of the village, the Sherburne Fire Department performed a rescue of an elderly couple who were surrounded by water.
