ONEONTA – Oxford’s Cinderella run to the championship game of the Otsenango Pony League ended in a 7-0 shutout loss to the Oneonta Hurricanes, earlier this month.
Oxford qualified for the postseason finishing second in division play with a 4-5 overall record. It blanked higher-seeded Sidney in the quarterfinals, and blasted Unatego 7-1 in the semifinals to set up its finals matchup.
Oneonta starter Zak Green held the Oxford bats in check pitching five scoreless innings for the win. Green struck out six and scattered three hits. Casey Bishop came on to pitch the final two frames fanning three batters and surrendering a single basehit.
Oneonta leadoff hitter Bennett Eggler went 2-for-3 with two runs scored. Green helped his own cause with a two-run double in the fourth to raise the lead to seven runs. Brandon Corna added an RBI single as part of Oneonta’s four-run third inning.
Tommy Voce had two of Oxford’s four hits in the loss. Kyle Crawford pitched 2 2-3 innings of scoreless relief striking out three.
Voce made major contributions to Oxford’s triumph over Unatego. At the dish, Voce went 4-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored. He also logged a seven-inning complete-game victory striking out five and giving up just five hits and one earned run. Garett Sylstra and Corey Marshman added two hits each for Oxford, while driving in three combined runs.
