NORWICH – The Chenango United Way, in collaboration with the United Way of Broome County, rolled out its new 2-1-1 information and referral telephone service in Chenango County on Monday, giving local residents a place to turn for the help they’re looking for.
By dialing 2-1-1, residents will be able to connect with trained specialists in the Susquehanna River Region Call Center who can assess the caller’s concerns and connect them with the agency appropriate to handle their needs. According to Chenango United Way Director Elizabeth Monaco, the service provides huge benefits for residents seeking help in the human service field who may not know where to start.
“We are excited to bring this service to Chenango County residents,” she said. “Our county is home to a number of established programs that assist people with everyday challenges. Through 2-1-1, we’re able to increase awareness and simplify the process by helping people navigate their options.”
In the U.S., 2-1-1 responded to more than 15.8 million confidential phone calls in 2012. Specialists direct callers to non-emergency services such as employment, food pantries, training, addiction prevention programs, affordable housing options, transportation, finance, support groups, and other pivotal community resources. The service is paid by collaborative funding from the New York State Office of Children and Family Services, the Chenango United Way, Chenango County Department of Social Services, and the United Way of Broome County.
