Norwich 5, Johnson City 2
JOHNSON CITY – At Johnson City Wednesday, Norwich took second through fourth singles in straight sets, and won at second and third doubles to remain perfect against STAC competition and finish the regular season with a 12-1 mark.
Norwich won its 12 STAC matches by a combined 74-10, and that included several shutout wins. “We only lost three matches last year, and that was great season,” said Norwich coach John Stewart. “This season was even better.”
Norwich singles players Makenzie Maynard, Breanna Cashman, and Caroline Stewart had dominant victories with Cashman and Stewart not surrendering a game. Sam Gage and Cohley Acenowr prevailed in straight sets at second doubles, while Danielle Williams and Savannah Williams were stretched to three sets before beating Christina Fuller and Hailee Jones. “We knew this match would be tough, but we also knew we would be tough at singles,” Stewart said. “Cohley and Sam had a big win against a good team, and we were able to squeak out a win at third doubles.”
Norwich hosts its first STAC semifinal match in many years when it entertains Vestal on Friday at 3 p.m.
