GREENE – Whitney Point brought Greene’s streak of eight straight winning seasons to a close Friday night.

The Golden Eagles limited Greene to just 32 rushing yards, and handed the Trojans their fifth straight defeat, 16-0, on homecoming weekend.

Whitney Point, limited to 57 yards of total offense in the first half, came alive behind speedy senor running back Donovan Sturdevant. Sturdevant’s elusiveness came into play in the second half, particularly in the fourth quarter, when he ran for 56 of his game-high 88 yards.

“Sturdevant is a heck of a back, and he hurt us in the second half,” said Greene head coach Dave Gorton. “He was able to break some runs on cutbacks, and that was due to some lack of discipline. That’s a product of us being young – you just don’t quite do your job on every play.”

Little-used back Nicholas Hust started the Eagles’ first scoring drive in the third taking an option pitch from quarterback Mitch Edson 17 yards into Greene territory. Edson connected with burly tight end Gabe Schrauger on a 15-yard pass over the middle to the Greene 20, and on a fourth-and-seven, Edson hit Andrew Gardner on a 17-yard TD pass. Gardner outjumped a Greene defender, and touched down just inside the right pylon. An Edson scamper for the two-point conversion gave Point an eight-point advantage.
