Sherburne-Earlville 34, Clinton 8
CLINTON – Sherburne-Earlville went to the air to soften up Clinton's defense, and proceeded to finish off an unbeaten regular season Saturday afternoon.
S-E junior quarterback Cody Marango threw three second-quarter touchdown passes, and added a fourth TD toss in the third quarter to finish 10-for-16 for 211 yards.
The Marauders offense stalled in the first quarter as Clinton stacked the line of scrimmage to slow the ground game. "They were sending the house to slow down our running game, so we switched it up with some play-action passing," said S-E head coach Mike Jasper, whose club is off to its first 7-0 start since joining Section III 11 years ago.
Marango threw scoring tosses of 36 and three yards to Ben Khoury, and his third – a 23-yarder – went to sophomore tight end Gavin Giroux.
Khoury completed a three-TD day hauling in a 34-yard strike from Marango in the third, and backup running back Gavin Paul finished up S-E’s scoring on a three-yard scoring plunge. Clinton avoided the shutout with a late touchdown run.
"My biggest fear coming in was that we would be a little flat, and we did that," Jasper said. "It was one of the longest weeks of practice we've ever had, We just wanted to get through this game and stay healthy, and we were able to do that."
