Greene 3, Watkins Glen 0

GREENE – Greene had little to no advance information on Friday’s opponent, Watkins Glen. Prior lack of knowledge mattered little as the Trojans extended their unbeaten record to 18-0, and advanced to the Section IV Class C semifinals.

“We went in kind of blind, but we knew they would be a physical opponent,” said Greene coach Rick Tallman. “We’re known as a finesse team, but I was proud of the way we stepped up physically. We had both elements (finesse and physical play).”

The Trojans defense was sparked by stopper Brian Leone, who in his third game back from injury was finally at 100 percent, Tallman said. On the offensive side, Kurt Bartholomew and Luke Day accounted for all three Greene goals.

Bartholomew scored during a scrum in front of the Watkins Glen goal approximately 13 minutes into the game. The second tally was much more picturesque, Tallman said. Bartholomew sent a through pass, and Day split the defense on his run to take the ball and beat the Senecas’ keeper. Bartholomew added an insurance goal in the second half.

Greene hosts Marathon Wednesday at 3:30 p.m. In the only meeting between these two schools in Tallman’s tenure, Marathon beat Greene in the Section IV finals. “They live, breathe, and die soccer over there,” Tallman said, himself a 1991 Marathon graduate. “They always have a quality team, and Chip Stewart is a great coach.”
