Girls’ Basketball
Sherburne Earlville 70, Sauquoit Valley 33
SHERBURNE – Sherburne-Earlville’s laid the blueprint for its success this season: Turning the other team over to create easy looks at the basket.
The Marauders forced 18 Sauquoit Valley turnovers in the first half to help open a 33-18 halftime lead.
“We shot the ball pretty well today,” said S-E coach Karen Mulligan. “We talk about getting points in the paint, too, and we don’t want to fall in love with the three. But if it’s there, we’ll take it.”
Sophomore Savannah Irwin picked up where she left off last season. After hitting 50 threes last season to tie a team record. Irwin bucketed her first trifecta less than two minutes into the season to give her club its first lead, 5-4. Jordan van Althuis followed with a three, and Irwin added two more three balls as the Marauders finished the quarter on a 7-0 spurt to take an 18-8 lead into the second quarter.
The Marauders finished with eight three-pointers in the game, and inside presence Lilly Berg, after a scoreless first half, scored all 14 of her points in the second half. Senior guard van Althuis added seven points to her first-half total to finish with a game-high 17, while Irwin finished with 16 – all in the first half.
