Sherburne-Earlville 66, Central Valley Academy 26
SHERBURNE – Sherburne-Earlville’s string of blowout victories to start the season reached five Monday night against visiting Central Valley Academy.
The Marauders’ quartet of Jordan van Althuis, Lilly Berg, Savannah Irwin, and Mattie Dowdall combined for all but five of their team’s points against the overmatched Thunder.
After a slow start, S-E finished the first quarter on a 12-3 spurt, and over the last two minutes of the first half, whipped off a 12-2 salvo to take a 36-14 lead into the locker room.
The Thunder had no answer for Sherburne-Earlville’s full-court press and half-court trapping defense as the host ballclub converted numerous easy buckets. “We talked about creating turnovers with our press, and in our trap, and they both worked,” said Marauders coach Karen Mulligan.
Senior guard van Althuis had a game-high 23 points to go with 10 rebounds and five assists. Irwin scored 13 and had five steals and four assists, Dowdall bucketed 13, and Berg added 12 points, eight rebounds, and five blocked shots. “It’s nice to have a lot of options on offense,” Mulligan said. “We don’t have to rely on one or two kids.”
Sherburne-Earlville hosts Canastota on Thursday. Mulligan said the S-E Tournament’s consolation game and finals, postponed this past Saturday, have been tentatively rescheduled for Saturday, Dec. 21.
