Unadilla Valley Tournament
Oneonta 85, Unadilla Valley 77 (finals)
S-E 63, Oxford 52 (consolation finals)
NEW BERLIN – Unadilla Valley was unable to match Oneonta’s prolific offense falling to the Yellowjackets in UV Holiday Tournament championship game Saturday night.
Tournament MVP Jordan Gutierrez had 33 points in the title win over the Storm, and reserve George Foti had five three balls and a season-high 21 points.
Gutierrez scored 62 points in the two-day tournament, and Oneonta’s offense eclipsed 50 points in the second half in each of its wins. Still, it took a strong closing finish by Oneonta to close out an upstart UV club that has just two losses this season – both to much larger schools.
“I told the team that I was proud of the way we battled, and we need to have that level of intensity in our league games so we can continue to improve,” said UV coach Matt Osborne.
Gutierrez and Foti offset the monster night from UV sophomore David Dufresne, who scored 32 points before fouling out in the final 20 seconds. Trailing Oneonta throughout the fourth quarter, Dufresne’s three closed the score to within 76-74. Albert Odero hit two free throws, and Gutierrez hit a three so deep and so far beyond the three-point arc, it nearly eminated from Otsego County. Oneonta closed on 9-3 run, and UV struggled from the line making one out of six free throws in the last 45 seconds.
