Hike for Hope: hikers raise donations for American Cancer Society

ADIRONDACKS – This coming June, Janet Thomas will lead a group of hikers on The Great Range Traverse in the Adirondack Mountain range, which 'Backpacker Magazine' ranked as the third most difficult hike in America. The traverse is 26-plus miles long and more than 10,000 vertical feet.

A 12-year survivor herself, Thomas is hiking to raise donations and awareness for the American Cancer Society's Relay for Life. While all hikers are welcome to join the traverse, Thomas said, “I'd like to get other survivors and have them involved. I'd like to give people, not just who are sick but their families, hope.”

Thomas asks for a donation of $24 ($2 per peak), but said donations of any amount would be greatly appreciated. Her goal is to reach $5,344 by the time of the hike, which is the height of Mount Marcy. All proceeds will go to the Snyder Communications Relay for Life team, which ensures the monies will stay in Chenango County.

Mount Marcy is the highest point in New York State and is also the first peak in the traverse. Thomas encourages long-time hikers and those newer to the past-time to join the hike, but advices them to build up for it. She and some other hikers plan on training and hiking together in order to prepare for the traverse in June. Those interested in a shorter segment of the hike are also encouraged to join.
