BOCES students earn credits, help elderly

NORWICH – A group of students from the DCMO-BOCES Norwich Campus have recently lent a hand in a series of projects spanning more than two weeks that will prove to help both themselves and the elderly.

Jaan Aarismaa, Conservation and Equipment Technology Instructor at the Norwich campus, has led the group of students – all from the Sherburne-Earlville Central School District – through the multiple phases which encompass tasks ranging from planting flowers and pruning shrubbery to patching deteriorating asphalt and repairing aged drainage systems at Grace View Manor located at 80 Calvary Drive in the City of Norwich.

“The students have really worked hard on this project, and at a glance you wouldn't really know that they did much because everything looks and works as it should now,” said Aarismaa.

A mini-backhoe, skid-steer and a large dump truck along with the students outfitted with safety-orange hard hats and high visibility neon green tee shirts gave the job site an authentic, professional look as the students worked along side Aarismaa honing the skills of the trade.

According to the instructor, the scope of work at the facility was beyond what the building manager could keep up with. Aarismaa took the opportunity to assist the facility while incorporating the project into the students' curriculum.

Along with the satisfaction of volunteering, the students also earned academic credits that are required for future advancement.
