Norwich brothers off to state championship

NORWICH – Two Norwich High School golfers are state championship bound after an impressive performance at the New York State Section Four golfing championship qualifier held over the weekend.

Brothers Corey and Ryan Johnson will play in the New York State high school golfing championship tournament on June 1-2 at the Cornell University golf course in Ithaca, a par 71 course. The two will strive against 97 other high school golfers from across the state.

“It's very difficult to make it to the state championships because there is no divisions of large schools and small schools,” said NHS golf coach Bob Branham. “What they have done is impressive and we're lucky that this is the first time we have had two players go on to the state championship.”

Saturday's section four qualifier, also held at Cornell University, started with 45 players from all over the area. Only the top nine in the section get to move on to compete against the top nine players from the 10 other sections in the state.

Having shot a total of 157, Corey, a senior, made three birdies on Saturday on holes four, eight and nine. His brother Ryan, only a freshman this year, will join him after having shot a total 163 and making two birdies on holes 10 and 12. The brothers finished in third and seventh place, respectively.
