NORWICH – There were appearances in Chenango County Court on Monday for arraignments, sentencing and restitution reviews.
• John A. Zangari, 51, Norwich, appeared in court for bail determination. The City of Norwich Court, where he originally appeared, was not able to set bail because he has a least two prior felony convictions. Zangari was originally charged with criminal possession of a controlled substance in the third degree, a class D felony, and criminal nuisance in the first degree, a class E felony. After some deliberation Revoir set bail at $50,000 cash or $500,000 bond and Zangari was remanded back to the Chenango County Correctional Facility.
First Assistant District Attorney Stephen M. Dunshee explained that Zangari has prior felony convictions, a rap sheet that included 17 prior misdemeanor arrests and was found with 130 bags of heroin, which he said is almost twice the normal amount for use by one person. He argued that Zangari is a “career criminal” and requested $50,000 bail.
Zangari was arrested on May 28 as a result of a long investigation by authorities into the drug trade in Norwich. He and another individual were arrested after authorities seized more than $5,000 worth of heroin.
