SIDNEY – A visit to the New York State Police Office, Troop C in Sidney, which covers seven different counties including Chenango, proved to be an informative and fun experience. Public Information Officer Trooper Nate Riegal was kind enough to provide a tour of the facilities, as well as information on the history and duties of Troop C.

The unit was first established in 1921, and the building speaks to its history. There are relics on display, such as badges, old log books and pictures dating back from 1917 (when New York State Police was founded). A large wall is dedicated to those officers who died in the line of duty. Trooper Christopher Skinner, who died earlier this year, will also have a picture on display. Pictures of Major Donald M. Faughnan, Troop C Commander, and Superintendent Joseph D'Amico are also set out for viewing. The superintendent is appointed by the governor, and is one of the most important positions in law enforcement in New York State.

“With more than 4,500 sworn men and women, the NYSP provides police services and a statewide basis through preventive patrol, investigating crimes, enforcing traffic laws and responding to emergencies and disasters,” states a NYSP pamphlet.
