C.J. Chenier brings a bit of bayou to East Park stage

NORWICH – A fervor of eclectic zydeco is booked for the second installment of the NBT Bank-sponsored Summer Concert Series, bringing Louisiana native C.J. Chenier and the Red-Hot Louisiana Band to the band stand in East Park downtown, Norwich.

The concert kicks off on Thursday evening starting at 7 p.m., and promises to bring some good down-home Louisiana bayou to Zydeco lovers of the northeast.

C.J. Chenier, who is the son of the much heralded 'King of Zydeco' Clifton Chenier, started out tooting his own horn early on by joining the ranks of his father's Red-Hot Louisiana Band – playing saxophone at the spirited age of 21.

Picking up the torch after his father's death in 1987, Chenier sought to forge his own identity in the close-knit genre and took up the accordion – thus taking charge of his father's ministry – to spread the word of Zydeco music to the world.
