SHERBURNE – Back on the Rack, a thrift store and training site for Opportunities for Chenango, announces a summer sale of all girls’ and boys’ clothing sizes 7 through 16.
“We have so many nice clothes in these sizes, including items from Abercrombie and Fitch, J. Crew, Hollister, Aeropostale, American Eagle, Tommy Hilfiger and Old Navy, including incredible jeans priced at just $3.99 to $ 4.99 and tops starting at $2.25,” said store manager and training Director Donna Wood-Craig. “We are slashing prices in half to help clear out inventory and introduce the store to pre-teen and teen girls and boys.”
Wood-Craig explained that, while this demographic group is not among the frequent shoppers at Back on the Rack, the store receives so many donations of new or nearly new items for these ages. “We have the same type of merchandise as the popular re-sale chain Plato’s Closet at a fraction of the price. We’re convinced that if teens give us a try, they’ll be back again and again.”
The half-price sale will run through Thursday, July 24.
Back on the Rack is located in downtown Sherburne at 12 W. State St. in front of the post office. There is convenient parking all around the building. Summer hours have changed to accommodate those who can’t get in to shop during the normal weekday hours of 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Now customers can shop late on Thursdays noon to 7 p.m.
“We changed our hours in June, and it seems to be catching on,” Wood-Craig said. “People have commented that it’s convenient to stop on their way home from work or after dinner.”
The store is also a job readiness training center for individuals who need to get some experience working in a small business. They learn how to work with customers from all walks of life, merchandise goods in the best possible way, and complete a sales transaction from beginning to end. Since she started in December, Wood-Craig said that one intern transitioned from receiving benefits and working in the store to landing a full-time job at The Colgate Inn to support herself and her children.
“You can’t put a price on boosting one’s self esteem because it’s priceless,” Wood-Craig said. “Right now, Back on the Rack has an excellent intern who is re-building her resume and her life.”
Katlyn Eddy, an intern, said “Back on the Rack is giving me the opportunity to get back into the Monday through Friday work world. I thoroughly enjoy assisting the customers and working for a good cause. I also appreciate seeing how generous people are when they donate to the store. I strongly recommend the program to others.”
Wood-Craig has contacted a Norwich business owner about Eddy’s commendable performance with the hope of securing her a full-time position.
Donations for Back on the Rack can be dropped off at Opportunities for Chenango, 44 W. Main St. in Norwich, or at the store, 12 W. State St. in Sherburne. To learn more about the training program, contact Donna Wood-Craig at 674-5028.
The store is open Monday through Friday, 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m., with the exception of late Thursdays, noon to 7 p.m.; and Saturdays 9 a.m. to noon.
