NORWICH – The sport of track and field grows stronger as the Norwich YMCA continues to offer young athletes a venue to learn or improve their running, jumping and throwing skills. This spring and summer, the Norwich YMCA offered two programs to area youth.
The first of these programs involved the coaching, training, and conditioning of youth in their various running, throwing, and jumping events leading to the Hershey Games Western New York regional track and field championship meet. This year, the championship meet was held in Greene on June 14, and two dozen of the area’s youth participated in this training program.
At the Hershey Games Championship meet in Greene, several Norwich athletes finished with impressive performances. including Gabe Sutton, first place, boys 9-10 400m and 100m; and third place in standing long jump; Drew Walsh, second place, boys 13-14 100m; Andrew Mullen, first place, boys 11-12 400m; Mason Edwards, third place, boys 9-10 200m; James Heath, second place, boys 13-14 200m, Alex Gage, Corry Woodard, James Heath, and Walsh, second place, boys 13-14 400m Relay; Margie Winters, third place, girls 11-12 100m; Jada Reynolds, first place, girls 9-10 400m; Katie Gawronski, first place, girls 11-12 800m; Winters, Gawronski, Taylor Ford, and Carissa Nichols, second place, girls 11-12 400m Relay.
