Sherburne-Earlville Tournament
SHERBURNE – Vernon-Verona-Sherrill swept the girls and boys titles Saturday night at the Sherburne-Earlville Soccer Tournament.
VVS’s Lauren Fletcher scored unassisted early in the second half to give her team a 3-1 cushion. Molly Karaman’s second goal of the game with 8:58 remaining drew the Marauders to within one. “It really was an even game and a lot of the game was in the midfield and who could possess it the best,” said S-E coach Kylie Davis. “We learned a lot about our shape and formation. We wanted to win the game, but the positive is that we learned so much, and we’re ready to keep improving.”
The Marauders’ Sierra Barker, Stacia Beckwith, and Lexi Elderkin were all-tournament picks
S-E girls rolled to into the title game blasting McGraw, 7-1. Morgan Simpson and Savannah Irwin had two goals apiece, while Annie Albertina, Taylor Coughlin, and Elderkin added tallies.
In the boys’ final, the Red Devils’ Austin Lallier scored with seven seconds left in the first half to give his club a 3-1 lead entering the break.
Lallier’s goal was the third of eight unanswered tallies in an 8-1 victory.
All-tournament pick Francesco Spoletini tied the game at 1-1 just 2 1/2 minutes after Norwich’s opening goal. Spoletini finished with a hat trick in the game scoring the go-ahead goal with 7:28 left in the first half. Austin Lynch added two goals for the winners, both coming in the game’s final eight minutes.
