NORWICH – On Saturday, September 13th, approximately 20 volunteers from Preferred Mutual, NY Pizzeria, and Stevie's Spiedies came together for the Adopt-A-Highway program. Volunteers spent nearly three hours cleaning-up a six-mile stretch of Route 8 in New Berlin, collecting more than 25 large bags of garbage from the sides of the road.
New York State's Adopt-A-Highway initiative began in 1990 as a response to the lack of federal funding available for roadside clean-up. Volunteers of this program "adopt" sections of highway and pledge to keep it free of litter and debris. The purpose of the Adopt-A-Highway project is to keep roads clean and beautiful despite lessening resources, and give communities a sense of pride in their highways.
