Guilford recognizes town’s first historic district

GUILFORD – Countless hours of research and support of members of the Guilford Historical Society is paying off in the form of a new sign that recognizes Rockwell Mills as the Town of Guilford’s first historic district.

On Thursday, members of the Guilford Historical Society gathered in Rockwell Mills, outside The Old Mill restaurant, to unveil a new sign identifying the hamlet as having been placed on the National Register of Historic Places by the United States Department of the Interior. Although the designation was first granted in 2010, this is the first the Historical Society can really make their claim widely known.

“After this was put on the Historic Register, we waited a while to find out how to get a sign for it because they cost $1,500 a piece. They’re so expensive,” said Guilford Town Historian Tom Gray.

Gray and other members of the Guilford Historical Society set out to find funding for the sign and as luck would have it, a networking conference for historians connected Gray to the William G. Pomeroy Foundation, an organization committed to helping preserve history through use of historic markers.
