NORWICH – As the year end celebrations begin, the Norwich Police Department offered tips to stay safe this New Year’s Eve.

Assistant Chief of Police Scott Burlison said the most important thing for those indulging in celebrations to remember is don’t drink and drive.

“Most people are getting the hint,” said Burlison, noting that arrests for drunk driving have reduced, which he attributed to the increase in education on the consequences. “The education is getting out there. People are realizing the danger and the costs of drinking and driving, so most develop a plan to get home.”

Burlison added that the loss of personal items is also common.

“Keep your valuables with you, such as your purse, wallet, phone and money,” he said. He suggested that party-goers with smart phones create a lock code for their phone if they don’t already have one, and also activate an app that could track the device if it’s misplaced or stolen.

“Stay in a group,” Burlison suggested. “It’s safer to not go out alone, but with your friends.” He stressed that if a friend overindulges in alcohol, don’t leave that friend alone. If one gets sick due to an overindulgence of alcohol, Burlison said it’s dangerous as one could choke on their own vomit, which could lead to death.
