NORWICH – A number of area residents and at least one Norwich business have notified authorities of a new scam that is making its way around upstate NYSEG customers, and police are now warning community members to exercise caution with regard to their personal information.

NYSEG utility customers are being contacted by phone by individual(s) stating that they work for NYSEG accounts. The caller then fabricates a story that indicated that “a problem occurred” with a past utility payment, and that service will be terminated if the account is not made current through an immediate payment.

According to business owner Sarah Woods, the caller instructed to purchase a ‘money card/debit card’ at a local retail store and send the payment in that fashion; otherwise they may be in jeopardy of having service disconnected.

“NYSEG calls and says that there was an error processing your last payment, and a tech is on their way to disconnect your power,” said Woods. “The person said that we could avoid termination by purchasing a prepaid card, and there was a new program at Dollar General that allows customers to pay utility bills.”

The Norwich City Police Department was notified by Woods and is warning NYSEG customers to scrutinize these types of calls, especially if they suggest paying for bills in this manner.
