AFTON – The Town of Afton is asking residents to weigh in on a proposal to purchase a building that would become the new site of all town functions.

Voters will decide whether or not the town should purchase an 8,000 square foot property, formerly owned by the company IVCI, by using a series of state grants and special reserve accounts which the town has earmarked for building modifications and upgrades. The new location would also share the Afton Town Court offices which are not currently in compliance with judicial space regulations.

As it stands, the township splits court and town functions between two separate buildings, one being the 1860s building in the historical district which houses town business offices; and the other which shares town court functions with the Village of Afton highway and police departments.

According to Afton Town Supervisor John Lawrence, purchasing the IVCI building would be a step forward in complying with state and federal mandates for improved accessibility, as well as satisfying judicial mandates for more space for the town court. He said the town would even save money in the long run by consolidating services into one efficient up-to-date building.
