Red, White, Blue, and Gold Meet at Newark Valley
NEWARK VALLEY – Norwich's girls placed third overall in team scoring with 52 points behind Ithaca and Vestal and the Red, White, Blue and Gold Meet at Newark Valley Saturday.
Norwich was buoyed by two first-place two second-place, and one third-place finish to rack up the points. Katelyn Shaver won the shot put and freshman Caroline Stewart captured the long jump to top the Tornado.
Shaver posted a throw of 35 feet, 4 1/2 inches to easily win her event by over two feet. Stewart led a one-two Norwich finish leaping 15-11 1/2, while teammate Morgan Hagenbuch was just six inches back. Stewart was also second in the triple jump (33-6 1/2) and Hagenbuch added a third in the 100-meter hurdles (17.11 seconds). Stewart was subsequently named the meet’s most valuable field performer.
On the boys' side, Norwich's David Bernstein was second in the discus with a throw of 146 feet, 9 inches; and Thomas Reilly was third in the shot put (43 feet, 8 inches).
