BINGHAMTON – Norwich seniors Colin and Zan Stewart earned a third straight trip to the New York State tennis tournament placing second at the Section IV State Qualifier, Saturday at the Binghamton Tennis Center.
After rolling to wins in the quarterfinals and semifinals, the Tornado duo was beaten in three sets by Ithaca's number one doubles team, Steven Carman and Jonathan Gomes, 7-6 (7-5), 2-6, 6-4, in the championship matchup.
"It was just phenomenal tennis and an unbelievable serving battle," said Norwich coach John Stewart of the match. "(The Ithaca kids) put a lot into the first set, and our guys took the second set quite easily.
"In the third set, they won two deuce points in the first three games to go up 3-0. We battled back and held off one match point, we just came up short. That was a very good Ithaca team that played out of their minds, and they had to in order to beat us."
Also competing for Norwich were Matt Craig in singles and Brendon Budd along with Alec Weaver in doubles. Both suffered first-round losses and subsequently lost their first-round consolation matches.
Greene doubles team Karl Zaengle and Michael Anderson went 1-2 in three matches with the Trojans earning a 6-4, 7-5 victory in their consolation round match against Norwich's Budd and Weaver.
