Above are shots of the proper disposal of American flags that have become faded or worn. Michele Gray, Commander of the American Legion Post 189 said, “As not only an American but as a veteran, the flag is very important to us that served and still serve. The purpose of The American Legion in adopting this ceremony was to encourage proper respect for the Flag of the United States and to provide for disposal of unserviceable flags in a dignified manner. As Americans and as veterans we love and respect our flag of the United States, as it becomes faded and worn we retire it from its service in an honorable manner, flags that have become unserviceable may be done in public with respectful and honorable rites. All year anybody wishing to retire a flag may bring it to the American Legion and we will take care of it properly.”
