NORWICH – The Greater Chenango Cares IRT invited members of the press to the Norwich High School Thursday, giving the community a guided tour of the portable medical station.

The program is part of an Innovative Readiness Training exercise that allows trained members of the Army, Navy and reserves to perform medical treatments and prevention techniques to patients.

According to IRT organizers, the goal is two-fold. While the exercise meets training requirements for reservists, the operation also allows the military to serve everyday citizens by offering general medical care, screenings, physical therapy, dental and optometry care.

The staff of more than 170 military personnel have been busy seeing a steady flow of more than 600 patients since the doors open four days ago, equating to nearly 4,000 procedures valued at over $330,000.
