No gluing until you know what you’re doing

OXFORD – The Oxford Memorial Library held a special community event for the public on Thursday evening on August 6, 2015.

Michael Albert, a Pop Artist based out of White Plains, New York travels the country putting on workshops for the communities he visits, free of charge.

“We actually met Michael for the first time last year. Senator Libous had a workshop for libraries to meet performers and artists. This guy really likes to go into schools and libraries and stuff and put on events like this so we worked something out and brought him in,” said Nancy Wilcox, Director of the Interlibrary Loan program at Oxford Memorial Library.

This program was made possible by the Senator Libous BOOKS program, which helped bring Albert in and fund the event.

“I am a Pop Artist, so I take classical themes and use our pop culture with them. I use things that everyone knows, even if they aren’t really into it. Art is important, it’s a higher level of fascinating, it’s on a different plane and that’s why I feel it’s valued,” said Michael Albert.

Pop Art originated in the United States in the late 1950’s and much like Albert said uses images and popular culture to display art in a new way.
