AFTON – A 19-year-old sits in the county jail on $10,000 bail after allegedly hitting at man in the head with a tree branch.
Stephen P. Counterman Jr. was arrested by the New York State Troopers on Sept. 21, 2015 and was charged with assault in the second degree, a class D felony, and criminal possession of a weapon in the fourth degree, a misdemeanor.
The arrest occurred after troopers were contacted regarding a possible assault at a campground on State Highway 7 in the Town of Afton.
According to troopers, an investigation determined that Counterman was engaged in a dispute with a 53-year-old male, and then Counterman struck said male in the back of the head with a tree branch.
“The strike caused a laceration to the victim which required medical attention at Wilson Memorial Hospital,” read a release from the State Police.
Counterman was arraigned in the Town of Afton Court. He was remanded to the Chenango County Correctional Facility in lieu of $10,000 cash bail or $20,000 property bond.
A felony hearing for Counterman is set for today, Tuesday, Sept. 22, 2015.
