SHELDRAKE – Two Chenango County teams, Sherburne-Earlviille and Norwich, went to Sullivan Community College this weekend to take part in the prestigious Eastern States Classic.
Jack Buell, out of the 195-pound weight class from S-E, was gunning for the Championship. However, that chance was taken away after he lost in the quarterfinals to Jay Arillo, of Westfield High School in Virginia. Buell would come back to win four straight matches and avenge his first loss to Arillo in a gritty 5-4 decision win to take third place at the tournament.
S-E head coach Brian Hicks was proud of Buell’s efforts. He said, “Our goal was third or higher. This is a preparation tournament for the end of the year and the New York State Tournament. He wrestled very aggressive and avenged his only loss.”
This is Buell’s second consecutive year placing third.
No Norwich wrestlers placed at the tournament, but head coach Bob Hagenbuch remained positive, saying, “Although no one placed, we wrestled well against good competition.”
