Tornado Throwers Continue To Shine

ITHACA – It was another fantastic showing for the Norwich Indoor Track throwers at the Section IV Class Championships, which were held at Ithaca College last Friday, Jan. 29.

David Bernstein was the main star, breaking the school and the Section IV record in weight throw, with a thumping heave of 59 feet, three inches to claim first place at the meet. Bernstein added to his accolades, finishing second in the shot put competition, hitting the 45 feet, four inches mark.

Two other throwers on the team, Thomas Reilly and Katelyn Shaver, also had impressive outings. Reilly grabbed another first place finish in the shot put competition, with a throw of 51 feet, three ½ inches, while Shaver finished second on the podium in the women’s shot put competition, throwing 36 feet, five ½ inches.

All three Norwich throwers have already qualified for the New Balance National Indoor Championships, to be held at the Armory in New York City on March 11-13. Bernstein has qualified for the National Championship division, while Reilly and Shaver have qualified for the Emerging Elite division.

There were a couple of other notable performances for the Purple Tornado at the meet. Emily Shattuck had a spectacular day, placing in three separate events. First, she broke the NHS indoor track record in the girls 55-meter dash, running a time of 07.71 to place sixth. Shattuck also placed fourth in the 300-meter race, with a time of 44.73 and third in the long jump, with a jump of 14 feet, 11 inches. Marysa Campbell earned a sixth place finish in the long jump behind Shattuck, with a jumped of 14 feet, eight ¾ inches.

On the mens side, the Tornado 800-meter relay team, comprised of Noah Bufalani, Eric Conant, David Berger and James Heath finished in fourth place, recording a time of 1:43.28. Conant also placed fifth in the long jump competition, with a jump of 18 feet, nine ¼ inches.

Overall, the Norwich women finished in seventh place, with 20 points, while the men took fifth place, with 38. Corning was the eventual winner of both the men and women’s division one sections.

Norwich women results:

55-meter dash: Emily Shattuck, ran 07.71, placed sixth; 300-meter: Emily Shattuck, ran 44.73, placed fourth; Long Jump: Emily Shattuck, jumped 14 feet, 11 inches, placed third; Marysa Campbell, jumped 14 feet, eight ¾ inches, placed sixth; Shot Put: Katelyn Shaver, threw 36 feet, five ½ inches, placed second.
