WESTMINSTER, MD – Casey Marson has been spotlighted as a Chenango County athlete, and Norwich High School alumni, who continues to shine in athletics beyond the high school level.

Marson, who graduated from Norwich high school in 2013, enjoyed a very successful career at the high school level playing golf for the Norwich Tornado.

However, some three years later and now a junior at McDaniel's College, Marson has continued to keep golf a big part of her life as she has been a three year contributor and has been named a first-time captain of the team as of this 2015-2016 season.

“I started playing golf when I was about two years old when I lived in Arizona. Both my parents play and so I was able to play pretty much year round just because of the weather there,” said Marson. “It has just been something I have loved my entire life, and something that I can continue to try to get better at always, because I will never be satisfied at where I am at. So to have a sport like that, where I can keep working on it always is great, it really is a lifelong sport.”

Marson moved to Norwich in 2000 when her family relocated to the area as she indicated, but after graduation Marson longed for a college that would be suited for her love of competitive golf.

“I found McDaniel College through golf, I was recruited by the coach. We have a golf course on campus and that was a pretty big selling point for me, it is so convenient for practicing,” said Marson. “It's funny because I found this school for golf, but I could not be happier to have come here in all aspects of college, not just for golf.”

McDaniel College in north central Maryland boasts a small, young, albeit productive golf team. With only five golfers on the women's roster and no graduating seniors, Marson explained that she has embraced the new leadership role with open arms while at the same time honing her game and meeting her personal goals.

“This is my first year being captain and it has been fun. It is a lot of pressure but I really like the leadership role. I really care about my team and I love looking out for them. It has been a really positive experience so far for me,” said Marson before explaining her personal goals. “I wanted to win an individual title, and in my college career I wanted to win a tournament. I did (win a tournament) in Myrtle Beech in the very beginning of my spring season. It was a one day tournament that we had, it was great.”

In the season opener in Myrtle Beach at Barefoot Golf Resort earlier this year, Marson shot a 87 in the one day tournament to help herself secure her first individual collegiate title.

Since the season opener Marson has been working on perfecting her game, to a point where now as the season comes to an end she has earned all-conference honors.

At the Centennial Conference Championship held in Denver, PA. Marson had another terrific outing for the two day conference championships.

The Centennial Conference consists of 10-schools including: John Hopkins, Haverford, McDaniel, Gettysburg, Washington(Md.), Muhlenberg, Franklin and Marshall, Dickinson, Swarthmore, and Ursinus as the conference competitors.

The par 72 course saw Marson secure a solid 90 on the first day followed by an even better showing at an 85 the second day, for total of just 175.

This 175 score earned Marson a tie at the fifth place spot in the championships, as well as the all-conference honors, something Marson even surprised herself on achieving.

“I tied for fifth place overall and top five make the all-conference team. So I barely squeaked in, but I was really excited I wasn’t expecting it at all, no way,” said Marson. “My first time getting all-conference. My team generally does fairly well in the conference like right up there with top few teams, but individually this was my first time making the all conference team.”

McDaniel College finished second overall at the conference championships this year and boasted a solid overall record throughout the season of 13-5 in the conference and 24-12 overall.

As Marson wraps up her junior year of school, studying Communication and in finishing out the athletic season, she will be looking to set new goals and continue her success into her senior year and beyond.

“I love the fact that it is an individual sport and I am kind of a perfectionist at things. I really try to challenge myself in probably most things that I do and also I am really small, so I am not really good at contact sports. This is something that I really enjoy competing in, and I know golf is something I am going to be able to enjoy for my whole life,” said Marson.

While home on break Marson interned for our Chenango County District Attorney's Office and will hope to continue on doing so this summer.

“After college I probably wont be competing too much anymore. But this is something that I love to do for fun also. For now it is really fun to work on something to get better at, and with the competitions that I go to during my season, and to have very distinct goals to try to achieve, it is just nice to set those objective goals,” said Marson. “ I am in Alpha Sigma Tau, a national sorority on campus, and I am in pre law fraternity here, and through greek I do a lot of community service stuff around campus.”

Marson will take her involvement on campus as well as her expected degree in Communication, and anticipates taking the LSAT exams this coming fall in hopes of pursuing and attending law school after college graduation in the spring of 2017.

“I just want do better; better than I already have. I want to win more titles, set new personal lows, and out-do what I have done so far. I want to end on a better note than where I have been,” said Marson.
