NEW BERLIN – Frank H. Arnold Post 348 of the American Legion is pleased to announce that Major General Peter S. Lennon, a graduate of New Berlin Central, will be the guest speaker at the Memorial Day services to be held in the Village of New Berlin.
Lennon is the son of the late Dr. Donald and Mrs. Louise Lennon and grew up in the New Berlin area. Upon graduation from New Berlin Central School in 1972, he was awarded an Army ROTC scholarship and attended Bucknell University in Pennsylvania to receive a double degree in civil engineering.
In 1977, he was commissioned as Second Lieutenant in the Army Transportation Corps. Following officer training at Ft. Eustis, Virginia, he was assigned to the 8th Infantry Division in Germany for three and a half years during the height of the Cold War. His next duty assignment was with the 4th Infantry Division at Fort Carson, Colorado. At the end of this assignment, he transitioned to Reserve Status in order to pursue a civilian career as a transportation engineer and analyst for the Department of Defense in the Washington DC area.
Following the terrorist attack of Sept. 11, 2001, Lennon was re-called to active duty in support of the War on Terrorism. Serving as a transportation planner in Baghdad, Iraq in the months following the initial invasion, he was selected by Ambassador Paul Bremer to serve as the operational lead for the United Nations’ multi-billion dollar Oil for Food Program.
